The Off the Road Band is exactly that, traveling the side tracks and byways of American music-a unique blend of many styles, including blues, bluegrass, jugband and good old rock and roll. And though you might occasionally hear an unusual arrangement of a classic tune, most of the band's offerings are its own original compositions.

Based in Chapel Hill/Pittsboro, NC, the sextet is made up of Don Johnson on rhythm guitar, Dave Haynes on drums, Bill Joyner on banjo, Betsy Clarke on fiddle and percussion, Mike Chandler on electric and upright bass and Mitch Renkow on accordion and electric lead guitar. All members contribute vocally and help write songs.

Founded in '96, the band has completed two CDs: Dixie Lane Detour ('98) (available at Chapel Hill's School Kids Records), and the band's latest offering: Catfish Moon (2001) (also available at School Kids Records). Also noteworthy is the band's alter ego: The Mother Vineyards Jug Band whose ensemble creation The Missing Years (2000) received high praise on Bill Thomas' JugBand Website.
